In a surprising move that has sent shockwaves through the bodybuilding community, Terrence “Ruff Diesel” Ruffin, one of the top competitors in the Classic Physique division, has announced that he will not be competing in the 2024 Mr. Olympia. Known for his consistent rivalry with reigning champion Chris Bumstead, Ruffin’s decision marks a significant shift in this year’s lineup.
Ruffin, who placed fifth at the 2023 Olympia, cited several reasons for his decision to sit out this year. A major factor was his struggle to meet the weight cap, which has become increasingly difficult as he attempts to improve his physique. “I weighed 169 to 171 last season, and my weight cut-off is 187,” Ruffin explained in a recent social media post. He also mentioned an elbow injury that further solidified his decision to take a break this year.
In conversations with industry insiders like Lee Labrada, Tyler Manion, and Alex Cero, Ruffin received advice that ultimately led him to prioritize his long-term career over short-term competition. “You can’t show up to a show not at your best,” Ruffin shared, reflecting on the importance of bringing a peak physique to the Olympia stage.
Ruffin also expressed a bittersweet sentiment about missing what could be the final Olympia for both Chris Bumstead and Brion Ansley, his long-time competitors. “It sucks because it seems like it may be Chris and Brion’s last run, and I would like to be on stage with them one last time,” Ruffin said, acknowledging their shared history in the Classic Physique division since 2016.
Ruffin’s absence opens the door for other competitors to challenge for the top spots. With Chris Bumstead potentially retiring after this year, the 2025 Olympia could see a significant shake-up in the rankings. Ruffin’s strategy to take time off to make necessary improvements could position him as a frontrunner in future competitions.
