Sergio Oliva Jr., son of the legendary Sergio Oliva, is making a highly anticipated return to the IFBB Pro circuit. After a disappointing third-place finish at the 2023 California Pro, Oliva is set to compete at the upcoming Empro Classic in Germany, marking his first competition under the guidance of coach Stefan Kienzl.
Standing over 6 feet tall and weighing north of 300 lbs in the off-season, Oliva possesses one of the most commanding physiques in the Men’s Open division. However, his Achilles’ heel has always been conditioning. Despite his genetic gifts, he has yet to bring a truly shredded look to the Olympia stage or major pro shows, which has cost him crucial placements.
This year is pivotal for Oliva. At 40 years old, the window for securing an Olympia qualification is narrowing. If he fails to win a pro show in 2024, his future in the sport may be in jeopardy. The Empro Classic will not be an easy contest, with formidable competitors like James Hollingshead and Carlos Thomas Jr. expected to be in the lineup.
For Oliva, achieving a razor-sharp condition is the key to success. His structural advantages—broad shoulders, tiny waist, and massive quads—set him apart, but they must be paired with dry, peeled conditioning to compete with the new wave of younger athletes. If he nails his prep, he could finally cement his status as an IFBB Pro champion and earn a long-awaited Mr. Olympia qualification.
